Fun

This is an image of a family having fun.

As most Australian states embark on Term 2, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your support and involvement in your children's education. I hope you had a wonderful time with your children over the holiday break, a time to cherish the moments away from the rush of mornings as everyone leaves for work and school.

Holidays allow our brains to consolidate things we’ve learned without realising it. Remember, a happy brain is more efficient at retaining learning than an angry or sad one.

The most robust learners in my classes were on the happier side of the emotional scale. Learning was still challenging for some. Often, the strong reader struggled with math, or the student who breezed through math found barriers regarding reading.

Many more students grasped the concepts of literacy and numeracy equally well. It wasn’t all down to their disposition, but how they approached their day at school enhanced their learning.

Dear parent, you are a prime influencer in this part of your child’s learning journey. Establishing morning routines is a crucial component. Rushing to be ready on time is a significant source of morning disagreements. A child who arrives at school tired, angry, or sad because of a morning battle will take at least until mid-morning to switch to learning mode.

Depending on the timetable, a minimum of 1-2 hours of learning is lost. It’s like trying to pick up the threads of a movie when you’ve missed the first 30 minutes. Not easy. Not fun.
