Head Space

This is an image of a happy child.

Developing deep thinking skills is essential in today's fast-paced world, where information is abundant and decisions are often complex. You can assist your child in creating the headspace for deep thinking.

Engaging in deep thinking can lead to a treasure trove of benefits—not only for your child but also for you.

The best way, bar none, is to engage your child in conversation.

Talk with them about anything and everything. Ask why questions. Challenge positions. This is not about proving right or wrong. It is about stimulating their developing brains to dive deep.

Of course, the flip side is active listening. Please encourage your child to state their position. Embrace healthy debates, listen actively, and be open to changing your mind. It's like mental gymnastics but without the leotard.

Set aside time each day (dinner time around the table is ideal) to reflect on what learning the day has brought.

This is a time to ask deep questions. An excellent place to start:

What was the best thing about your day?

Go around the table asking the same question of everyone. It’s important that no judgements are made. Accept each answer without reservation.

So, take the time to nurture those minds, engage with diverse ideas, and continue to expand their capacity for deep thinking – the rewards are boundless.
