Juxtaposition

Understanding the various ways in which students learn is critical to effective teaching. We all have unique strengths and preferences when it comes to acquiring knowledge. Tailoring teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles can enhance student engagement, comprehension and retention.

Let’s check out a few:

    • Lecture-based

No, no, no! Lecturing is the quickest route to disengagement. If you’re going to do it, use creative questions that build group knowledge and understanding. Incorporate visuals and interesting sound bites. Please, please do not stand at the front of the room and … lecture.

    • Hands-on

Use in conjunction with the above. The restless students will love a chance to move, touch and engage.

    • Collaborative Learning

Now we’re learning! Collaborative learning environments foster student interaction and communication, benefiting social and kinesthetic learners. Group projects, investigations, and peer-to-peer teaching allow students to learn from one another, not just you.

    • Integrated Technology

Technology is best described as something that wasn’t around before you were born. Use it! Integrate it! Encourage your students to design better ways of using it. They’ll come up with way better ideas than us.

    • Adapt

Engage the diverse range of students by mixing up your approaches. Use a traditional approach for delivering instructions. Use modern techniques like the previous two when the learning calls for it.
