The Magic Within
Reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Not only does reading have a profound impact on child development, but it also opens doors to endless opportunities and enriches their lives.
Capturing the attention and interest of young readers can be challenging. It requires a thoughtful approach, an understanding of their preferences, and the ability to create a captivating reading experience.
Reading is more than just a way to pass the time; it plays a vital role in a child's development. Reading sparks imagination and creativity, allowing children to explore new worlds and experiences from the comfort of their own minds.
When young readers immerse themselves in books, their brains work to make connections and build vocabulary and understanding. Fantasy stories are particularly effective at lighting up a middle-grade reader’s imagination. A browse through any bookshop reveals a truckload of books in this genre. Not only are the stories in physical books, but they also have a presence through online bookstores and libraries.
So, how do we get a young reader to take notice? There is no easy answer. Getting lost in a book competes with swiping through content on a tablet or phone.
One way to engage with the reading process is through bedtime stories. If the kids are past the routine of picture books, try serialising a chapter book. (Spoiler alert: my books feature shorter chapters. I try to leave a ‘hook’ at the end of each one so readers want to return for more.)
Another method is to set aside family time where everyone reads something. Start with five minutes and gradually increase. Screens, of course, must be turned off. Make conversation over dinner about reading material and reading behaviours.
Visit your local library, where posters about books are displayed. Authors often give talks about their writing at libraries.
Never underestimate the magic within books.
