Words and more words

This is a boy playing computer games.

Reading has all those words and more words. Think of letters as blocks you build words with. Writers join the words together into sentences–like this one.

Four or five sentences make a paragraph. Five or six paragraphs, and you’ve got a page. Before you know it, you’ve got a book. Every book began as one sentence, followed by another, and another.

Think about a terrific story you’ve read. Or a story that someone read to you.

Now think about a great movie you’ve watched.

How about a song with, you know, catchy words? One you can’t stop singing to yourself. (Okay, an earworm!)

Have you got a favourite recipe? One that’s in a recipe book, or maybe you found one online.

Have you watched an internet video that makes you laugh? Cry? Or one that you want to share with friends?

Do you have a favourite computer game? One that tells a story? (Even shooting games have a story.)

What joins together everything? Yeah, yeah, I had to read to get to this spot. But what else glues them all together? They all use words. Someone wrote them.

Wait! Just a minute! A movie’s not words; I watch it. A video game’s not words; I play it. Well, yes … and no. Before that happened, a writer took some words and put them in the correct order.

The actors in a movie don’t just make it up as they go along. Someone wrote words for them to learn.

Do songs tell stories? Country songs do! Love (yew) songs do!

Have a look at any website. Are there words and more words on it?
